Trief Kerb

Since 1962, the Brett Trief Containment Kerb System has been delivering high levels of vehicle and pedestrian protection and is widely recognised as having made a substantial contribution to British road safety.

Today, the Trief Kerb system continues to set the benchmark for containment kerbs with a versatile range of easy-to-install, passive road safety components.

Trief is a safety kerbing system which is designed to contain and re-direct vehicles safely back onto those carriageways where, if they were to stray unchecked, they may cause injury to pedestrians, damage to local structures or damage to the vehicles and drivers themselves. In these instances, Trief Kerb will provide better containment of vehicles than standard kerb units.

The Brett Trief Kerb has been designed and proven to work in three ways to prevent vehicles leaving the carriageway:

1. The Trief Kerb is designed to present a clear visual signal to road users that it will prevent vehicles trying to leave the carriageway. Its height also discourages pedestrians from crossing the highway. The result is that the separate streams of road users are effectively segregated – a key contributor to enhanced road safety.

2. The Trief Kerb has a 25mm upstand from the highway surface leading onto an inclined shoulder. This is essential to give road users an initial physical warning that their vehicle is leaving the carriageway and that they need to take action to bring their vehicle back onto the carriageway. The inclined shoulder will help the driver bring the vehicle back onto the carriageway.

3. The Trief Kerb is designed to capture the sidewall bulge of a vehicle tyre within its concave section, thereby helping to contain the vehicle within the carriageway boundary. Once contained, the result is that the tyre is turned parallel to the kerb thereby minimising the upward traction available to the tyre and its ability mount the kerb

The famous Trief Kerb is available in two sizes GST2A for use on carriageways and roads with typical traffic speeds of 40mph and GST2 for use in areas of reduced excavation, such as bridge or car park decks where a containment kerb is still required. The wider Trief Containment Kerb system is comprised of a range of components, including quadrants, short lengths, as well as radius and transition kerbs. Although typically supplied in a smooth concrete finish, the Brett trief can also be supplied in a rough ‘washed ‘ finish or in natural Granite.

This allows for a wide range of design possibilities that can address specific site constraints and safety considerations. The use of transition kerbs allows Trief Kerbs to be seamlessly integrated into existing half batter kerbs.

Trief Cadet

The smaller Trief Kerb for lighter traffic areas…

Built to the same design and high standards as the world-famous Trief Kerb, the Trief Cadet Kerb brings the same solid reliability and deterrence features to the roadway – in a more compact form.

A scaled-down version of its parent kerb with the same ramped ‘toe’ and concave recess profile, the Trief Cadet Kerb redirects lighter vehicles back into their correct path and prevents traffic incursion into vulnerable areas like verges. Its compact size makes it ideal for areas where a high degree of visual and physical traffic direction is needed, but where the more imposing presence of the standard Trief Kerb is unnecessary.

Trief Cadet Kerb can often be seen providing a visual and physical presence in traffic calming and traffic directing schemes. It is particularly appropriate in areas such as residential developments where the imposing standard Trief Kerb is not as suitable.

Trief Cadet is perfect for the protection of verges and is used to establish a physical restraint around a range of verges, paths and landscaped areas, its fluent lines make it a pleasing addition to roads or suburban settings.

The strong and dependable Trief Cadet Kerb provides a multi-purpose traffic management solution. It is suitable for a range of hard landscaping schemes, from the creation of protective barriers to small traffic directing measures. Trief Cadet Kerb:

• Prevents lighter vehicles accidentally leaving the carriageway, encroaching into unsuitable or vulnerable areas and parking illegally
• Deters by forming a clear visual barrier that encourages drivers to steer away from it
• Protects by introducing a strong buffer that safeguards verges, landscaped areas, pavements and pedestrians.

The Brett Trief Cadet Kerb is available with a range of components, including quadrants, short lengths, as well as radius and transition kerbs. Although typically supplied in a smooth concrete finish, the Brett trief can also be supplied in a rough ‘washed ‘ finish or in natural Granite.

This allows for a wide range of design possibilities that can address specific site constraints and safety considerations. The use of transition kerbs allows Trief Cadet Kerbs to be seamlessly integrated into existing half batter kerbs.

The unique chevron design is extremely effective for directional indication at traffic islands and roundabouts. The units feature the same design, specification and production qualities as the Trief and Trief Cadet units.

Trief and Trief Cadet Chevron units are ideal for roundabouts, where the visibility of the markings and the physical presence of the unit both guide and re-direct drivers within the carriageway.

Trief and Trief Cadet Chevron units are available in a choice of surface finishes: marker for a non-reflective finish or Ballotini finish, which contains glass Ballotini beads for a reflective surface finish. Both are available in black and white. Other colours are available on request.

Kassel Kerb

The Brett Kassel Kerb system has been specifically designed to allow bus drivers to confidently position their vehicle close to the kerb for fast, safe and easy passenger access, without tyre damage.

Used in over 1,200 cities and towns across the UK and the Continent, Kassel Kerb is, today, Europe’s number one bus docking system.

Brett Kassel Kerb Bus Boarding System

The drive to maximise the use of public transport to reduce urban congestion now also forms part of the Carbon Reduction strategy of many local authorities – however access has often been cited as a reason why the uptake of public transport is limited especially amongst the visually impaired and disabled. This is despite the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 (DDA) which requires measures to be taken to improve access for these very groups.

The Brett Kassel Kerb represents a major advance in public transport access and convenience by significantly improving passenger safety, especially for the disabled and visually impaired, whilst its unique design profile reduces expensive wear and tear on vehicle tyres substantially cutting overheads for bus and coach operators. In achieving this the speed of access is also increased enabling the transport system to operate more efficiently.

The Brett Kassel Kerb works by guiding vehicles into the optimal stopping position thereby reducing the vertical and horizontal gap between the bus platform and the pavement to just 50mm – less than the typical gap between platform and pavement on most tram systems. The results are safer, faster and easier passenger, wheelchair and pushchair access, providing a more efficient and accessible community transport service without the expense of installing a fixed track system.

Available in 160mm and 180mm high versions and available with either a smooth concrete finish or in natural Granite with a wide range of accessories to allow for a smooth transition into standard kerb profiles the Kassel Kerb system is a must when designing public transit programmes.

Kassel Slimline 160/180

Brett Slimline Kassel Kerb Bus Boarding System

Brett Slimline Kassel Kerbs are ideally suited for retro-fit applications where designers do not wish to disturb the existing kerb line and require minimal excavation prior to installation. Just like its larger cousin the Slimline Kassel Kerb works by guiding vehicles into the optimal stopping position thereby reducing the vertical and horizontal gap between the bus platform and the pavement to just 50mm – less than the typical gap between platform and pavement on most tram systems. The results are safer, faster and easier passenger, wheelchair and pushchair access, providing a more efficient and accessible community transport service without the expense of installing a fixed track system.

The unique Slimline profile and its transition units match those of the standard Kassel profile enable the system to be simply integrated into existing kerb configurations so minimising time, cost of installation and disruption to local traffic whilst still obtaining the benefits of improved access, reduced wear and tear on vehicle tyres substantially cutting overheads for bus and coach operators and compliance with the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 (DDA) which requires measures to be taken to improve access for the visually impaired and disabled.

Available in 160mm and 180mm high versions and available with either a smooth concrete finish or in natural Granite with a wide range of accessories to allow for a smooth transition into standard kerb profiles the Kassel Kerb system is a must when designing public transit programmes.
